Kakadu National Park is located in the Northern Territory of Australia and stretches over 20,000 square kilometres.
This unbelievable expanse is home to some of the most breathtaking landscapes in Australia and is full historic culture, unique flora and fauna and an abundance of native wildlife.
Mammals
Kakadu is known for being extremely biologically diverse, therefore it is teeming with so many different species of animals. There are eight types of kangaroo found in the region, the most popular being the agile wallaby and the antilopine wallaroos that are often found feeding in open grass areas. The notorious dingo and its piercing howls are often seen roaming throughout the park, be sure to stay aware as they can be dangerous. Adorable sugar gliders, northern quolls and brush tailed phascogales can be found hiding in tree hollows, if you want a photo of these cute little creatures, be quick, as they can be speedy!
Crocodiles
Quite possibly one of Australia’s most well known and feared creatures is the crocodile. Two species of crocs call Kakadu home, the relatively harmless freshwater crocodile, and the deadly saltwater crocodile. Saltwater crocodiles can reach up to 6 metres in length and are extremely dangerous, be sure to keep an eye out when exploring Kakadu as they can be found in floodplains, coastal waters and sometimes even in freshwater billabongs.
Reptiles and Snakes
A variety of reptile species are found in Kakadu, 36 species of snakes to be exact. Four species of snakes found in the park are lethal to humans, they include the taipan, the king brown, the death adder, and the western brown snake. Large pythons can be spotted in many of the waterways throughout Kakadu, the Oenpelli python being one that is only found in the Arnhem Land Plateau and is very well known to the indigenous people of the region. Many species of lizards and skinks are also commonly found roaming in the sand and climbing trees.
Fish
Around 57 species of freshwater fish have been recorded to live in Kakadu’s waterways. They include the black bream, the toothless catfish, barramundi, rainbow fish, the archer fish and so many more. Recreational fishing is allowed in Kakadu, however, be sure to keep an eye out for the unfriendly crocodiles lurking in the waters of the park.
Birds
The diverse landscapes of Kakadu are home to more than 280 species of birds, and a large population of Australia’s total bird life population. Common birds found in the park include, the red-tailed black cockatoo, jabiru, brolga, comb-crested jacana, several species of eagles and so much more.
