Back when Europe was only a longtime fantasy, I dreamt of stunning sunshine days, sapphire ocean waters, and white sandy beaches. Picturing myself on a Croatia sail, or riding a scooter around Italy. But sadly, my wallet said another thing, with the sunshine luxuries of Europe’s summer much too grand for my budget.

However, I didn’t let this faze me, bookmarking my summer dreams and creating new whims involving pure white snow and charming Christmas markets. Yes, some may overlook Europe’s winter as the cold and dreary time better well spend on a tropical beach somewhere. But my time backpacking through the continent helped me understand the true beauty this time of year can be in Europe. Learning that with some cities and countries, winter is when they thrive!

White snow blankets the area, and boutique shops promise cosy interiors with welcoming fireplaces and steaming cups of hot chocolate. Christmas markets are Europe’s speciality, becoming one of the must-see events year-round. Selling homemade crafts, Christmas decorations, and delicious mulled wine for you to warm yourself up with. Regardless of whether you’re looking for a relaxing break amongst the stunning scenery or a more upbeat adventure, Europe’s winter is well worth the plane ticket.

Prague, Czech Republic

Despite December and February being Prague’s coldest months, with some simple layers and a bulky winter coat, you can easily stroll through the city’s streets for endless hours without getting a chill. Even if you aren’t the biggest architecture fan, the sheer beauty of Prague’s historic buildings and bridges will stun you. Undoubtedly my favourite activity in Prague was walking across the famous Charles Bridge. Make sure to visit in the early hours of the morning, so you can truly enjoy the deserted quiet bliss of the scenery.

Bruges, Belgium

Flanked by small canals, cobblestone streets, and medieval buildings, Bruges is a fairy-tale city bursting with romance. It is an enchanting place, making you feel like you’ve jumped straight into a fairy-tale story. Hop on a boat and travel the small canals to see the city’s unique picturesque historic core.

Munich, Germany

What better way to warm up from the cold than to drink a litre of beer in one sitting? Munich is home to a carefree attitude, historic spots, and endless amounts of carbs. The city opens its arms to tourists, showcasing their traditional culture proudly at the famous Hofbräuhaus. With delightful German music echoing around the hall, delicious sausages and salty pretzels up for grabs, and a herd of laughing people banning together to fight the cold.

Budapest, Hungary

You most likely will recognise the outdoor baths of Budapest, as it is one of the most iconic sites in all of Europe. These thermal baths are used by both locals and tourists, with the steaming, mineral-rich water melting every visitor’s troubles away. Winter is the perfect time to travel here, as the hot outdoor baths create an enchanting and foggy experience. One of my all-time favourite experiences was sitting in the steaming hot thermal baths while it snowed down from above.

Amsterdam, Netherlands

With magical canals, ancient architecture, and bikes zooming by, Amsterdam’s streets are like no other. Winter enhances its natural beauty even more by blanketing the entire region in pure white snow. Come night-time, all of the city is bright with lights, with the Amsterdam Light Festival held every winter season. To see the entire light display, hop on a boat tour after sunset!

Interlaken, Switzerland

Switzerland is a winter wonderland, with skiing, hiking, and even paragliding on offer within the snowy scenery. After travelling around the country, stop into the picturesque area of Interlaken. With great greenery, looming mountaintops, and some of the purest blue waters I’ve ever seen, Interlaken is well worth the visit.
